Sustainable learning environments: Modern school buildings for the future

In contemporary school construction, both functionality and high architectural standards are required. The construction of schools is always a contribution to shaping the future. Systematised construction processes mean that educational buildings can not only be realised economically and quickly, but can also be designed to be particularly sustainable. Energy-efficient shells, the use of resource-saving materials and compliance with recognised sustainability standards such as DGNB Gold or BREEAM are integral parts of the design. This makes it possible to significantly reduce CO₂ emissions compared to conventional construction methods - without compromising on the architectural design.

Bregenzer Straße primary school in Monheim am Rhein

A current project shows what sustainable school construction can look like in concrete terms: in just one and a half years, a new primary school was built that combines wood, steel and concrete in a sophisticated architectural concept. Two parts of the building are connected by a light-flooded timber structure that houses central units such as the canteen, foyer and all-day rooms. The sports hall was also newly built and uses wooden elements in the facade and roof construction. The earnings are a pleasant, heat-filled indoor climate and a harmonious overall appearance. The roof surfaces are greenery and have already been prepared for the installation of photovoltaics.

Outdoor spaces close to nature as places of learning

Outdoor areas are not only seen as a design element, but are also used specifically as active learning spaces. Near-natural free areas promote biodiversity and offer space for environmental education in everyday school life. This creates green classrooms in which children can directly experience ecological relationships and develop an awareness of sustainable behaviour.

This concept has also been implemented in Monheim: open recreational areas and flexibly usable rooms complement the school's educational programme. The combination of sustainable construction, rapid realisation and architectural quality shows what modern, systematised school construction can look like today - economical, ecological and forward-looking.
